About the Test
In the 1960's and 1970's, colleges & universities on the East or West
Coasts required the SAT
*, while colleges in the
midwest and south required the ACT
*. While these
admissions requirements have changed dramatically (the vast
majority of schools now accept either test equally), many
of us on the East Coast assume that our students still must
take the SAT
*, or
that the ACT
* is somehow a "lesser" test
- neither of which is accurate. Students are largely able
to choose which test they take and which scores they submit
to schools. In this competitive college admissions environment,
many families are realizing that the ACT
* adds
another alternative for their students to demonstrate strong
test scores.

* vs SAT

more about how we at Anderson Tutoring Center are addressing
the increasing popularity of the ACT
*.
What is the Difference between the SAT* and ACT*?
The SAT
* is a logic and reasoning test, while the ACT
* is an aptitude test.
On the SAT
*, students will have to apply content knowledge as well as tricky
reasoning in order to solve a problem, whereas on the ACT
*, questions are
more straightforward.
Think of the SAT
* as a crossword puzzle, and think
of the ACT
* as a high school final exam. The challenge of the SAT
* is its
trickiness, while the challenge of the ACT
* is content knowledge and pacing
(the ACT requires students to work at a faster pace).
The SAT
* tests students
on mathematics, English, reading, and writing, and scores total 2400. The
ACT
* tests students on all these same areas plus science (although the science
is not Biology or Chemistry-based, rather the test is more like reading
comprehension with scientific passages), and scores total 36.
